How to Check Tire Tread Depth

Row of tires

It’s one of the most common questions asked of our service technicians here at Porterville Ford is actually “How do I check tire tread wear”? And it’s no secret as to why. It’s an easy DIY task, all you need is a penny or a ruler, and it’s an important one as well as it keeps your vehicle from experiencing a blowout on the road or worse. Tread depth decreases over time and with use, so traction gradually worsens and your tires are less effective at gripping the road while you’re traveling around Visalia. This can compromise the safe handling of the vehicle, especially when driving in wet conditions. To maintain optimal traction and control, learn how to check tire tread depth below. If you still have any questions, then don’t hesitate to reach out to our team today at Porterville Ford and we’ll help you get on the path to being an expert DIY home mechanic.

Recommended Tire Tread Depth

Before we get into the ways and how to check tire tread wear, let’s cover the ideal tread depth. On new tires, the tread depth is usually around 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch, which is about one-third of an inch. Snow tires, off-roading tires, and certain SUV and truck tires often have deeper tread depth. When the tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch or less, it’s time to replace your tires.

How to Check Tire Tread Depth with the Penny Test

While you can insert a ruler into the tread to measure its depth, a simple penny can be an equally effective tool–and you likely already have one in your pocket! Here is how to check tire tread depth using the classic penny test:

  1. Insert the penny into the tread grooves with Lincoln’s head upside-down and facing you.
  2. Check if Lincoln’s head is concealed by the tread.
  3. If any part of his head is concealed, you’re still above 2/32 of an inch. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tire treads are 2/32 of an inch or less, which means you need new tires.
  4. Repeat on all four tires. It can also be helpful to perform the penny test on a few different areas of each tire.

How to Check Tire Tread Depth in Other Ways

Don’t have a penny handy? There are other easy methods to check your tread depth. The first is with a tread depth gauge. Visit your preferred Tulare or Delano auto parts store and buy a tire tread depth gauge. The probe should be inserted into the shallowest groove before you position the top bar flush against the tire. This will show you the wear rating.

Many tires come with built-in wear indicators, which can also be used to check tread depth. These small, raised bars are located at different points within the grooves between the tread markings. If the bars are even with the ribs of the tire, the tread depth is 2/32 of an inch or less.
